A NATIONAL University of Singapore undergraduate who was convicted of sexual offences against three young boys was sentenced to 4 1/2 years' jail and five strokes of the cane on Friday.

Andy Lee Kee Liang, 24, a final-year chemical engineering student, was found guilty last month of one charge of attempted outrage of modesty playground equipment and two counts each of aggravated molestation and unnatural sex.

He is appealing against conviction and sentence.

He did not dispute what he had done to the inflatable bouncers three boys, aged 14 to 15, at Hougang between Aug 30 and Sept 11, 2007.

His sole defence was that he was of unsound mind then and was incapable of forming the requisite intention.

Two defence psychiatrists, Dr Yeo Seem Huat and Dr Ang Yong Guan, testified that he was suffering from severe depression with psychotic symptoms at the time of the offences.

Lee had claimed that he heard voices telling him to commit those acts.

However, the two defence psychiatrists said under cross-examination by Deputy Public Prosecutor Isaac Tan that Lee knew the nature of the acts and that what he was doing was wrong at the time.

The prosecution's psychiatrist from the Institute of Mental Health, Dr Jerome Goh, said that Lee was not suffering from any mental illness.

Lee was observed for three weeks at the Complex Medical Centre and he did not behave abnormally, said Dr Goh.

He was given three years and one stroke each for game machines kissing the lips of a 15-year-old boy, and for trying to kiss the cheek and touch the groin of a 14-year-old a week later.

 NEWPORT BEACH (California) - INVESTIGATORS believe Danny Pang, the international financier who died in Southern California last weekend while facing charges of fraud, committed suicide, a police spokesman said Friday.

Pang was indicted in July on charges of pearl jewelry illegally structuring financial transactions to evade currency-reporting requirements, just months after the Securities and Exchange Commission seized his assets and those of his two investment companies.

Pang, a Taiwanese immigrant, died Saturday at a hospital, a day after police and paramedics were called to his gated-community home.

'It is our opinion that the death appears to be suicide,' said Newport Beach Police Sergeant Evan Sailor.

However, Pang's death won't officially be ruled a suicide until the coroner's investigation is finished, Sgt Sailor said.

Mr David Schindler, a lawyer who represented Pang, said Thursday that any speculation that his late client's death was a suicide is 'offensive'.
